Sheet Metal
Fabrication refers to the bending and shaping
processes of sheet metal techniques. Sheet metal fabrication is the
manipulation of metal to create any type of component that will be used in an
end product. It can be used in almost any manufacturing field including
medical, computer, electronics, or appliances. Sheet metals can be given all
sorts of complex hollow shapes and sections, and the equipment used for these
processes, range from simple hand tools, to sophisticated power-operated automatic
machinery. Sheet metal is simply metal formed into thin and flat pieces.
It is one of the fundamental forms
used in metalworking, and can be cut and bent into a variety of different
shapes. The process of Sheet Metal Fabrication was developed ages ago where
hand tools were used to fabricate metals. Now various technologies have evolved
to accomplish the process. There are many different metals that can be cut into
sheet metal including the following: Titanium, Aluminum, Nickel, Brass, Tin,
Copper and Steel. Special metals like Platinum, Gold and Silver can also be
done but these are usually saved for special decorative uses and can be very
expensive. In the case of fabrication, you utilize hand tools or machinery and
a little elbow grease to come up with the desired output.
Some of the types of Precision
Sheet Metal Fabrication include processes like Annealing (heating), Bending
(straining), Cold forming, Cold rolling (shaping sheet metal using rollers),
Drawing (material is forced into a die with a punch to form a cup-like shape),
Forging (hammering or pressing), Rolling (reducing thickness of the material),
Extrusion (producing cylindrical bars or hollow tubes by forcing round billets
through one or more dies) and Spinning (forms axially symmetrical shapes).
There are various products that are created during precision sheet metal
fabrication. The most common objects produced are metal cabinets, enclosures,
ventilation shafts, hoods, exhaust systems, tanks and prototypes. Metal
fabrication is also techniques are different from other metal methods such as,
for instance, casting where you need to use some kind of mold to create the
structure.
